Cosa impari in questo corso?
This course explores areas of science that are among the most rapidly advancing and exciting, from medical biology, which is concerned with a detailed understanding of the human body in health and disease, to microbiology, the study of those life forms that are essentially unicellular and mostly too small to see with the naked eye.
In Year 1 this degree will provide you with a broad grounding in biological science. Years 2 & 3 allow you to choose one of two possible degree pathways:
- Medical Biology and Cell & Molecular Biology
- Medical Biology and Microbiology
The first year core modules, which include Human Anatomy and Microbiology develop essential study skills and laboratory experience, whilst studying a range of biology topics. In your second and third years, you will take a range of core modules, as well as others that you can select from a list of designated modules. During your final year, you will carry out your own laboratory-based research project.
Year one core modules
- Core Biology
- Introduction to Biochemistry and Microbiology
- Foundations of Cell Biology
- General Microbiology
- Human Anatomy and Physiology I
- Human Anatomy and Physiology II
Year two core modules
- Preparation for Research
- Laboratory Techniques for the Biomedical Sciences
- Metabolism and its Control
- Principles of Genetics
- Principles of Pathology
- Physiology of Organ Systems
- DNA and Gene Manipulation
Year three core modules
- Undergraduate Research Project
- Clinical Immunology
- Human Pathology
- Medical Microbiology
- Microbial Pathogenicity

A wide range of modern, dynamic learning and teaching methods are employed. The methods used have been designed to meet the specific learning outcomes of the course. Assessment includes coursework and formal examinations.
Career opportunities: This degree will provide an excellent preparation for a variety of careers, both subject specific and generic. Many recent graduates have found employment in the health service, publishing, or industry, particularly in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Others have gone on to pursue research, or have chosen to complete a PGCE and go into education.
