This Building Surveying course runs in 2016/17. 

The discipline of building surveying is one of the most exciting areas of the property industry. As a successful graduate building surveyor your career can be a whole range of options from historic buildings to maintaining the existing stock of commercial buildings.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This Building Surveying course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to be able to give expert advice on construction, maintenance, repair and refurbishment of buildings, always ensuring compliance with statutory regulations.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • an accredited course leading to membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS);
  • academic staff who are active researchers and consultants to RICS in their field and who have professional industrial experience which they bring into their teaching;
  • the opportunity to apply for a full year work placement which can count towards your professional Chartered status;
  • studying with a wide range of other professional disciplines in an integrated School of Energy, Construction and Environment, reflecting the modern interdisciplinary nature of the construction industry;
  • integrated project work, running through each year of the course, where theory is put into practice as soon as it is learned;
  • further study and specialisation is available by studying a PhD or one of our MSc courses.

 

Accreditation


Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

  

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course themes include: building pathology, construction technology and environmental services, contract administration, design and specification, surveying techniques and principles, legal and regulatory compliance, commercial management of construction, conservation and restoration, measurement of land and property, and quantification and costing of construction works. 

In the first year you will be introduced to the fundamental topics of building design and the construction process, which are essential to practitioners in all of the construction professions, and an understanding of what a building surveyor does. 

In the second year you will focus on the practical aspects of what a building surveyor needs to know regarding building pathology, defect diagnosis and remedies. Construction law, conservation and adaptation of buildings also feature heavily at this level. 

In your final year you will focus on topics such as contract management, historic buildings and building surveying practice and you will apply your knowledge into a ‘real life’ project that will reflect the skills required in professional practice.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

You will find that your course is taught using lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratories, workshops and studio sessions. These will be supervised by academic and technical support staff. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree. Help and guidance is given to enable you to successfully complete your post - degree Assessment of Professional Competence by the RICS Regional Training Advisor.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, essays 20%; practical or project work 20%; group work 10%; presentations, posters etc.10%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as: 

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, tutorials and project work (or later, individual project supervision) each week 

Medium group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials, CAD or drawing studio each week

Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week 

Personal study: 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time – including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.
