Children and young people continue to be a very important focus of national and international policies. This degree has been designed for those with the aim of working with children and young people in a variety of contexts, as well as for those with a more general interest in this area.

This Childhood and Youth Studies course runs in 2016/17.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This exciting Childhood and Youth Studies course aims to equip you to be part of the society in dealing with social issues relating to children and young people:

  • Diverse student group providing great opportunities for interactive and accessible learning;
  • equips you with theory, knowledge and employability skills that reflects the focus of national and international policies concerned with children and young people;
  • expertise in developing innovative and inclusive learning;
  • you are taught by a team of experts from various subjects including sociology, psychology, educational, youth work and careers guidance. Experts from practice settings such as youth and community, education, health and social care also teach on the course;
  • excellent relationships with relevant agencies;
  • allows progression to a range of professional and postgraduate courses;
  • experienced, well qualified, research active teaching staff;
  • the opportunity to gain relevant work experience;
  • the opportunity to take a sandwich year to study abroad or work in the UK or abroad.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The first year will introduce you to the key themes in the degree, namely childhood and youth in context; working with groups; developing life skills; and education theory. The second year will build on these themes, and look particularly at health and needs of Psychological and Sociology Perspective and research methods. The final year will focus on theory, policy and practice, organisational change and will feature the completion of a project which will be based on your work experience. In addition, you will also study theoretical approached to enabling individuals.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

The course team is drawn from a wide variety of subject areas to enrich your learning, and offer a wide variety of academic and professional perspectives to develop your skills and knowledge. The team also hold academic and professional qualifications. In addition, tutors have developed expertise in providing innovative learning, including the development of interactive online resources and practical, problem-based approaches. Our course uses a variety of teaching and interactive learning methods including lectures, seminars, group work, student presentations, visits, guest speakers and work experience.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 2%; coursework, tests, essays 65%; presentations, posters etc.10%; other e.g. placements etc.23%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorial (or, later, individual project supervision) each week

Medium group teaching: 7 hours of workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 12 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 10-15 hours each week studying and revising in your own time and (in the second and final year) on average 5 hours per week placement
