A little History:
Flamenco is a form of art and culture from Spain, particular to the province of Andalusia born out of the people’s dispair. It involves singing, dancing, the guitar playing as well as rhythms created by hand clapping (palmas) or other methods. The music is said to be influenced by the punjabi chants of India, the Persian Zyriab song form, Jewish synagogue chants, Arabic Zayal and Andalucian Folk dances. In the dance movements, one can see very strong similarities between East Indian dance forms and Flamenco which further highlights the notion that Flamenco dance orrigionated from migrating Indian tribes. Flamenco orrigionally was all cante/baile “jondo”. The Soleares said to be the ‘mother’ of all rythyms. Later during the Opera flamenco the repertoire was enhanced. Today’s Flamenco dances fall into 3 groups: Baile Jondo eg Seguiriyas, Baile Intermedio eg. Alegrias and Baile Chico eg Tangos.
