Sustainable Cultural Heritage Program Description
In balancing theory and practice this Master’s Program prepares students for employment in heritage administration, development control and consultancies, as well as for continuing in academic research.
This program addresses the following:
Practical skills to be able to budget and manage projects, to fundraise and to ensure that heritage is not exploited by illegal trafficking.
An understanding of the complexity of heritage economics, its relationship to tourism, to the local community and to conservation issues.
An appreciation of the role of heritage in the broader political and legal context, including issues of contested heritage, dark heritage and an understanding of the role of heritage in forming identity at the local, regional, national and transnational levels.

The prerequisite for admission is a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, Humanities or Social Science and excellent knowledge of English.

Programma
The total number of credits for the MA program is 39 of which 30 credits is for course work, 3 for the internship and 6 for the thesis.
Core Courses – 18 credits totalCore courses are obligatory for all students enrolled in the M.A. program. They include:
Business for Cultural Heritage Professionals (6 credits)Contemporary Issues in Cultural Heritage (3 credits)Cultural Heritage and International Development (3 credits)Heritage Economics (3 credits)Sustainable Conservation (1 credit)Heritage Legal Frameworks (1 credit)Fundraising for Cultural Heritage Projects (1 credit)Required Internship – 3 credits totalInternship (3 credits)Elective Courses – 12 credits totalElective courses are designed to enable students to shape their own professional and/or research profile depending on their interests and future career aspirations. The program allows a certain flexibility, not only with the choice of elective courses, but also in respect to the time frame in which these courses can be taken. However, students are required to complete all course work before they can submit their thesis.
Heritage Tourism (3 credits)Archaeology Practicum (3 credits)Field trip: Rome and Athens: From antiquity to modern capital citiesLevel 400 courses which could be offered at level 500 with an enrichment element
Global Heritage (3 credits)Conflict Resolution and Negotiation (3 credits)Global Marketing (3 credits)Exact selection and number of elective courses offered in each semester is subject to change. Students will be informed about available elective courses for the fall semester upon opening of the application procedure for the MA program. Students will be asked to choose elective courses in the fall semester upon the official registration for the program. Students choose elective courses for the spring semester by the end of the winter break.
