Study of Production-to-Consumption Systems Internship

General Information:

Starting date: March 2010

Length: 2 -3 months

Monthly Allowance: 1000RMB + bus transportation reimbursed

Internship description:

1. Preparing an up-to-date overview of all PCS* studies carried out

2. Analyzing the studies

3. Identify and analyze common constraints and bottlenecks and their underlying causes

4. Identify and analyze common solutions or explanations

5. Check to see if recommendations from PCS studies have been addressed and with what results

6. Draw conclusions based on these national studies

7. Prepare an article for publication on the company’s website on main findings of the studies

* This company has commissioned studies in many different countries to collect data on all aspects of the present state of the bamboo and/or rattan sectors. These are called Production-to-Consumption System (PCS) studies and they investigate the entire chain of activities to which the bamboo or rattan is subjected, from the production of raw materials (including the input market, where one exists) through the various stages of intermediate sales and processing, to the consumer of the final product. The studies include also topics such as the technologies used to process the material as well as the social, political and economic environments in which these processes operate.

Requirements:

1. Ideally post graduate student or above with some knowledge of forestry products, economics, regulations and laws or related areas

2. Good writing skills

3. Able to take initiative

4. Capable of working on his/her own

5. Enthusiastic

6. Fluency in Chinese, French or Spanish a plus

Internship Company description:

The company is an intergovernmental non-profit organization with the mandate “To improve the wellbeing of the producers and users of bamboo and rattan”. They currently have 34 member countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, plus Canada, and run development projects in many of these. They are funded by key grants from the governments of China, Canada and the Netherlands, and by UN-IFAD, and by project grants from donors such as DfID, the EU and Common Fund for Commodities.

The main activities of this company are running rural and sectoral development projects, training and technology transfer, and environmental amelioration projects with bamboo and rattan. They also do work to support the global bamboo and rattan sectors, such as the development of standards and codes for bamboo products, developing improved trade reporting systems, and development of databases on such diverse subjects as global bamboo and rattan resources, and bamboo and rattan technologies suitable for gender-equitable development.
