What sets our course apart is our belief that it's important to take an integrated approach when tackling pollution. We bring different disciplines together to look not only at the mechanics of how pollution happens and can be tackled, but the wider socioeconomic, ethical, legal and political context.

You'll study the characteristics and sources of different pollutants; their effects on organisms, ecosystems and the climate; how to control them and reduce their impact; natural purification processes; and waste treatment and disposal. You'll also look at the socioeconomic and legal context surrounding pollution, including environmental law, the role of local authorities, and ethical and political factors. You'll learn to compile technical reports, carry out health and safety checks, review literature and give appropriate citations and references, and collect and analyse data. You'll also cover project management, including the principles of statistics, analytical skills, risk assessment and product design.

The course is made up of five core modules, one module from a range of options and the MSc project module.

A major part of the course will be your research project and dissertation. If you are working, you may be able to base your project at your workplace; if not, we can hopefully help you find a placement. If you're an overseas student, you should be able to do your project in your home country if you want to. Some students have also based their projects at the Universitat de Valencia, with which we have links under the ERASMUS scheme.

There are five core modules and a research project. In addition to these five core modules there are a range of optional modules which students may choose to study.
