This Lower Intermediate German evening course is the follow-up to German Year 1(Beginners) . It runs over three terms that progressively build on one another and is aimed at people who have done around 60 hours of formal learning. Students learn new structures and vocabulary around different topics to extend the range of expression in this highly communicative course. Students build on and advance listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and cover the main points in German grammar. This part-time German language course enables communication with more variation and fluency, so students feel confident in most everyday situations with German native speakers. It also broadens their understanding of the German culture and way of life.If you missed the October enrolment and you already have some knowledge of German, you can join the German Lower Intermediate class in Term 2 or 3 but you will need to have your level assessed. What will I learn?

Please note that some topics of German Year 1 will be revised at the beginning of the academic year. The course outline below is only a guide and topics will be studied according to students' needs and progress.

Term 1

Topics covered

Recent and past events, places of interest, looks and character of people, CV and professional world

Grammatical structures
Revision of perfect tense (regular and irregular), revision of Dative case in a sentence, revision of local preposition & case, adjective endings with definite and indefinite article, modal verbs in the past tense, the verb "werden", subordinate clauses, ordinal numbers

o    Talking about recent events and holidays
o    Describing places you have visited
o    Describing people and their character
o    Expressing opinions and discussing pros and cons
o    Discussing the German education system
o    Writing a CV
o    Talking about your career choices and work

Term 2

Topics covered
Entertainment, culture, music, TV; past events, family relations and upbringing
Grammatical structures
reflexive verbs plus preposition, subjunctive II (conditional), past tense, more subordinate clauses, infinitive plus "zu"

o    Talking about cultural events you have attended
o    Finding out more about German music and subculture
o    Expressing wishes, dreams, possibilities, eventualities
o    Giving advice
o    Narrating sequences in the past tense
o    Reading short literary text

Nature and environment; life in Germany and abroad; press, current affairs and history

Grammatical structures
Relative clauses, passive voice in the present and past, indirect questions sentences, more subordinate clauses, overall revision
