" Mathematics and Data Analytics MSci/BSc (Hons) OVERVIEW

This course can be studied as:

    This course aims to provide the essential training needed for sophisticated analysts. This course brings together a range of mathematical, statistical and computational techniques that the modern data analyst needs.

    You will study a combination of mathematics, data analysis and computing modules to tackle a huge variety of interesting and engaging problems from business and industry. Skills learnt on this course are essential in sectors such as IT, healthcare, sports, finance, marketing and sales industries.

    WHAT WILL I LEARN?

    The first year lays the mathematical and computational foundations on which the rest of the course builds.

    During the second year, you will consolidate your knowledge of the core mathematical methods, broadening the data analytic and statistical elements and have the opportunity to choose another module. Your studies will have a strong practical emphasis in modern data analysis.

    In the third year, you will continue your study of the above themes and you may engage in a final year dissertation project with the support of a dedicated supervisor.

    Students who progress to MSci in the fourth year of the course will learn how to apply mathematical techniques and computational algorithms to real world problems and how to interpret and analyse big data.

    HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

    Your timetable with is based on lectures, computer laboratory sessions and example classes. We schedule weekly sessions where your module lecturers are available to provide support and in addition to group work sessions, you will also have regular tutorials. The Mathematics Support Centre is open seven days a week to provide you with one - to - one support. The centre also has specialist staff to provide extra support for dyslexic students. 

    You will work with staff on real world problems from industry, commerce and research groups as you would in professional practice. This allows you to develop professional skills whilst learning the technical content of your degree.

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

    An estimated breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

    • formal examinations 47% 
    • coursework (including tests and group work) 47% 
    • practical work (including presentations) 6%.
    TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

    Each module has a different mix between lectures, tutorials and labs. In a typical week you will have 15-19 contact hours of instruction, consisting of:

    Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of personal academic tutorial (or later, individual project supervision) each week.

    Medium group teaching: 6-12 hours of tutorials, laboratories and studio sessions each week.Large group teaching: 6-12 hours of lectures each week.

    Personal study: 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time - including some guided study using hand-outs, online activities and other material.
