Programma

Mode of delivery: Full time, on campus,  (distance learning not available)

Duration:  1 year 

Intake: Approximately 15   students per year

Entry requirements:

  • We welcome applications from candidates interested in our course who have the skills and capability to excel.  All candidates are considered on an individual basis based on their qualifications, experience, references and motivation. 
  • Applicants must posses a good honours degree (minimum lower 2nd class) from a recognised university in a biological, biomedical or biochemistry based subject, or a related field.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide evidence of an English language qualification. English language test requirements may be waived where students’ undergraduate degree was studied in an English speaking country. Find out more about our English language requirements.
  • The information contained on this website details the typical entry requirements for this course for the most commonly offered qualifications. Applicants with alternative qualifications may wish to enquire with the relevant admissions teams prior to application whether or not their qualifications are deemed acceptable. For less commonly encountered qualifications this will be judged on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the academic admissions tutor.

  • This course aims to provide you with a high level of scientific knowledge and understanding of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine - from the molecular to the whole system level. The course aims to enable you to develop an informed and critical appreciation of recent scientific developments in these areas of modern biomedical sciences and its clinical and industrial application, as well as a practical skill set for further research and learning, e.g. PhD studies.

    This course offers a flexible framework of core and optional modules. The core modules are:

    • Advanced Laboratory Skills with Data Analysis and Interpretation:  A broadly practical based modules that will allow you to reinforce your understanding of, and ability in, the basic lab techniques. It will also introduce students to more advanced laboratory techniques such as PCR and SDS PAGE analysis.
    • Understanding Professional Practice & Enhancing your Employability:  In this module you are introduced to the variety of employment options open to you upon completion of the course and given practical help in writing effective applications.
    • Mammalian Cell Biology and Culture:  This modules gives you both the practical experience of cell culture and supporting theoretical knowledge in cell biology.
    • Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering Technology:  The module provides a introduction to the nature of stem cells, including stem cell self-renewal, lineage commitment and cell differentiation. The module will provide both a historical overview of how stem cell and tissue engineering technology has developed and allow you to critically assess how common factors/themes may underlie its success.
    • Cellular Differentiation in Cell Biology:  This module covers selected concepts and experimental approaches in developmental biology which shed light on the mechanisms involved in the acquisition of cellular determination and differentiation.
    • Tissue Regeneration:  T his module will allow you to consider cellular responses to injury and the factors influencing tissue regeneration.
    • Laboratory  Based Research Project:  This module provides the student with an opportunity to undertake an extended piece of research on their own

    Optional modules include, but are not limited to:

    • Ageing and Regenerative Medicine:  This allows you to gain an insight into relationships and interactions between ageing and regenerative medicines. You will learn how ageing can affect cell phenotypes and activity, including the "ageing cell" as a model of ageing-related diseases.
    • Applied Biotechnology: This module provides students with an in depth knowledge of the engineering and biological principles of the industrial production of a range of bioactive molecules by fermentation and cell culture
    • Biomedical Imaging:  This practical-based module aims to introduce students to the various techniques and applications available to allow advanced biomedical imaging and both qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological cells and samples.

    Note that not all options may be available in any one year and that options will not proceed if the minimum student intake number is not reached.
