The MSc by Research (Psychoanalysis) offers the opportunity to pursue independent research in an area of personal interest under supervision of one of the members of the Centre for Psychoanalysis.

The Centre for Psychoanalysis has led the way in teaching psychoanalysis since 1990 as one of the first universities in the UK to offer psychoanalysis at graduate level, initially via our MA degree and currently with research degrees (MPhil and PhD).

Members of the Centre for Psychoanalysis are able to supervise research in these areas:

The work of Freud, Jung, Lacan, Ferenczi, Klein, Winnicott, Fairbairn, Bion

Post Colonialism and psychoanalysis, including Fanon


Religion and psychoanalysis

Mourning, memory and transmission

Literature and psychoanalysis

Ethics of psychoanalysis

The objective of the MSc by Research (Psychoanalysis) is to produce a dissertation of approximately 30,000 words under the supervision of one of the members of the Centre for Psychoanalysis.

Students will expand their critical and analytic skills in a productive atmosphere, working with the academics and clinicians of the Centre. You will have the opportunity to attend group seminars and individual tutorials on research methodology as appropriate to the pursuit of the area of interest. These approaches may include archival research, historical research, conceptual research and textual analysis.


Assessment will be based on a final dissertation of approximately 30,000 words. Two independent examiners will be appointed who will read and evaluate the dissertation, following which you will be invited to make an oral defence of your work.
