Programma

The first year provides an introduction to key themes in international development and teaches you how evidence is used in development policy. The degree programme becomes more flexible in years two and three, allowing you to combine a variety of modules focusing on various topics, regions and themes.

Year 1

In your first year you will be introduced to contemporary debates and issues in international development. You will take two compulsory core modules – ‘Introduction to Development Studies’ and ‘Evidence in Development’. Alongside these modules, you will choose three optional modules from a diverse range provided by the School. These include ‘Introduction to Economics of Development’, ‘Introduction to Human Geography', and 'Social Anthropology and International Development 1'.

Year 2

In your second year you will start to tailor your learning and will select and continue with two main subject areas, chosen from anthropology, politics, economics, natural resources and geography. You will also be able to choose from a range of optional modules, including ‘Gender and Development’, ‘Communication for Development’ and ‘Latin American Development.’

You will also study research methods, and there is the opportunity to study a module from a different School, such as a foreign language.

Year 3

During your third year you will write a dissertation on a development topic of your own choice, supervised by an academic with expertise in your chosen area of research. In addition to this you will continue to define your own learning, selecting a number of optional modules from a diverse range that will include ‘Wars and Humanitarian Crises’, ‘Education and Development,’ or a module from another School.

In the spring semester you will have the opportunity to choose modules from an alternative range, including 'Globalisation and Economic Development', 'Urban Geographies', 'Resource Development and Conservation' and 'Engaging Anthropology in Development' amongst others. You can also opt to do a work placement in the UK, or take a vocational skills module, 'Development in Practice'.
