The course provides the specific tools for thermo-mechanical analysis and design assessment of structural components for fission and fusion nuclear reactors, by taking into account the irradiation effects occurring in the selected materials, and referring to the nuclear regulatory specifications as well. The course develops an engineering approach to design, analysis and verification based on thermal-hydraulic and thermo-mechanical modelling of reactor components under irradiation as well as on the technological limits and mutual compatibility requirements for the materials adopted. The class is assigned a "design-by-analysis" task, in the frame of a Project Lab aimed at the preliminary mechanical sizing and verification of a significant structural component (e.g., pressure vessel and thermal shielding, fuel element, steam generator), chosen each year among those adopted in current or Gen IV nuclear reactors.
