Overview
This course offers you the opportunity to specialise in either Composition or Musicology & Ethnomusicology and is taught in the heart of London with access to major arts centres. It covers a wide range of subjects: the Composition pathway enables you to work closely with your lecturers to study a variety of musical genres and styles and,if you choose Musicology, you will benefit from seminars with leaders in the field covering the evolution of different musical forms and their role in and expression of the cultures in which they developed.
You can specialise in either Composition or Musicology and Ethnomusicology by selecting from a wide range of modulesacross Arts and Humanities.
All international students applying for the MMus programme by 30 March will be considered for the Anthony & Susan Chow Scholarship, worth £30,000 in tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend. There is only one award per year and the successful applicant will be notified by 30 April. Find out more.

Year 1 Required Modules

Musicology & Ethnomusicology Pathway

  • Special Study in Musicology or Ethnomusicology (60 credits), eg: a dissertation or critical edition of 12,000 words (c. 8,000 words in the case of critical editions or transcription projects)

Composition Pathway

You are required to take:

  • Special Study in Composition (60 credits), eg: 
    • a work for small orchestra or large instrumental ensemble
    • a choral work
    • a string quartet
    • a piano sonata or set of variations
    • a song cycle
Optional Modules

Musicology & Ethnomusicology Pathway

In addition, you are required to take between three and six modules (totalling 120 credits) from a range that may typically include:

  • Issues in Historiography & Criticism (20 credits)
  • Performance, Gesture & Meaning (20 credits)
  • Readings in the New Eighteenth Century (20 credits)
  • Medieval Music from the Sources (20 credits)
  • History in Ethnomusicology (20 credits)
  • Music in Nineteenth-Century London (20 credits)
  • Issues in Biography & Criticism (20 credits)
  • Issues & Topics in Jazz (20 credits)
  • Ethnographic Writing (20 credits)
  • Post-Tonal Music & Composition Studies (20 credits)
  • Introduction to Free Composition Studies (40 credits)
  • Composing for Large Ensemble or Orchestra (40 credits)
  • Up to 40 credits from Master’s modules offered across the Faculty of Arts & Humanities
  • Up to 30 credits from Master’s modules offered by the MMus courses at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)
