Antenatal & Newborn Screening

Do you work in a context which involves antenatal or newborn screening? Our distance-learning course will provide you with a wide range of higher-level screening skills. You’ll enhance your decision-making about screening and deepen your understanding of the conditions you’re looking for.

You’re already working with women/infants who have antenatal or newborn screening, and you want to increase your understanding of the conditions that are screened and the implementation of the screening programme.

You’ll cover the complex screening issues faced during pregnancy and the neonatal period, the screening tests, and conditions to look for. You’ll look at the principles and drivers which influence screening and its provision, and parents' perspective on screening. You’ll explore related ethical and professional issues, as well as communication and information-giving. You’ll also find out about the National Screening Committee.

Our distance-learning course will make it easier for you to combine study with your work. It is delivered online, with weekly tutorial support via email, telephone and discussion boards.

Assessment

You’ll be assessed on the basis of a 5,000-word case study (including a reflection on the screening for the disorder mentioned in the case-study) and a 1,000-word vignette considering the family's experience of screening.
