This course opens up the world of healthcare science. You’ll learn how to use specialist equipment to diagnose and treat problems relating to patients’ circulatory or respiratory systems, as well as problems which can cause difficulties sleeping. On graduation, you could work in a hospital or in the community.
Untitled Page Full descriptionWe’ll prepare you to work in either cardiovascular or respiratory disciplines as well as with patients who have difficulties with sleep.
You’ll learn how to record and analyse a range of investigations and diagnostic tests.
- Cardiac physiology uses a range of methods and equipment to assess cardiac function (if heart disease is known or suspected) and contributes to the patient's treatment.
- Vascular technology uses ultrasound and other non-invasive forms of blood-flow analysis to help diagnose disorders of the blood vessels and helps to guide treatment.
- Respiratory physiology uses a range of investigations to assess patients with lung, airway or blood oxygenation problems. It identifies the potential causes and the patients’ response to treatment. The tests often require active encouragement of the patient and a caring approach.
- Sleep physiology investigates disturbances in sleep, such as sleep apnoea. Patients are monitored and a diagnosis is made which informs their treatment and long-term management.
You’ll spend around a third of the course on clinical placements, doing work-based learning. This involves ten weeks in Year 1, 15 weeks in Year 2 and 25 weeks in Year 3. To help you prepare for clinical practice, you’ll use Anglia Ruskin’s own excellent equipment, during which you will do some tests on your fellow students (such as spirometry or having blood pressure recorded).
Throughout the course, you’ll have the support of our friendly, helpful tutors. You’ll also go on trips to further your understanding – this may include museums and hospital departments.
