HISTORY OF CONFLICTS

After a general introduction on the basic notions of "military history", "war history" and "cultural history of war", this course will examine in detail the origins and events of both the World Wars. Particular attention will be reserved to the italian case between 1914 and 1948.
It will touch on most if not all of the following topics:
- development and significance of a "war culture" in Europe between 1914 and the '60s
- social, economic, and diplomatic background to the european conflicts
- military Leadership during WW1 and WW2
- reorganization of society and economy caused by the demands of total war
- literature, poetry, and art of war
- war againts civilians and war crimes
- question of responsibility and the attempt to assign 'war guilt.'
- politics of memory in Postwar Europe
- transition from war to peace in Europe
