Programma

The programme
Cutting-edge technology is used to dissect and understand processes which integrate governance issues, societal trends and management methodologies. Key areas of study in the University of Twente’s CME programme include sustainable building, public-private governance, industrialization, and digitalization in engineering and construction, supply chain management and risk management. This broad programme has been developed in close association with the construction industry and is not only project-based but also geared to process and design.
CME is a 4TU programme, (4 technical universities programme) which, in this case, means that if you sign up for this Master's programme, you are able to take courses at the other 3 high tech universities in the Netherlands: Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology and Wageningen University. At the University of Twente, the Master’s programme in CME focuses on the management of the design and construction process in the building industry. You will gain thorough knowledge of both the engineering and organizational aspects of this intricate process. This combination is essential to mastering current practices in complex, innovative and multidisciplinary projects in dynamic environments.
The UT-approach centres on the market environment and the organization and management of the various stages of the building process. Keywords at the UT include: cooperation through the entire lifecycle, helicopter view, stakeholder approach and engaged scholarship. The emphasis is on designing, managing and organizing the design and construction process.

The Master's programme in Construction Management and Engineering (CME) covers two academic years. An academic year is divided into four quarters with a schedule of ten weeks each.

Year 1
At the beginning of the first year, you get to set up your own individual programme with the track coordinator. You also choose your specialization from the start. A programme consists of 85 EC worth of courses, one 5 EC course to prepare you for your graduation project and the graduation project itself, which includes your Master’s thesis (30 EC). You will take 60 EC worth of courses in your first year.
The general course component introduces you to the four cornerstones of this field: project management, process management, legal and governance aspects, and collaborative design and engineering. It also includes a required course on research methodology.

Specialization courses may include:
Building Information Modelling and 5D Planning / Procurement Strategies & Tendering / Legal and Governance Aspects / Sustainability and Circularity in Civil Engineering / Planning and process management / Construction Industry Dynamics / Construction Process Management / Systems Engineering in Construction / Infrastructure Asset Management / Digital Technologies for Civil Engineering / Technology and Innovation in Road Construction

Year 2
