The programme
The role of technology in healthcare is gaining importance. Therefore, there is a growing need for engineers with broad technical knowledge, insight into the workings of the human body and creative ideas. During this programme you will be trained to be such an engineer. You will be taught to research, design and develop technology for healthcare. You will use and develop technology to realize new and original applications. Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary field, combining engineering with the natural and life sciences.
During this course University of Twente will teach you to take the needs and interests of patients as your starting point and to convert those into a product. Once you have correctly analysed the problem, you will draw on your knowledge of physics, mathematics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biology and medicine to come up with the desired technological solution.

The programme is closely associated with the Technical Medical Centre of the University of Twente. The Technical Medical Centre aims to improve healthcare by personalized technology. It is a leading innovation hub impacting healthcare by excellent research, innovation and educational programmes. You will have the opportunity to work with leading researchers and scientists during your programme.

This programme focuses on four key areas:
-Bioengineering technologies is about developing technologies that can contribute to the recovery of diseased of damaged tissue, such as bone, blood vessels or organs.
-Imaging and in vitro diagnostics focuses on techniques for visualizing and interpreting the processes in cells and bodies (such as acoustics, ultrasound, radiation and magnetism).
- Physiological signals and systems focuses on the central nervous system: for example, you analyse models of the brain, or you examine how electrical stimuli can repair disturbed body functions;
- Bio robotics is about the application of robotics and mechatronics in medicine and healthcare, which you investigate from a mechatronic point of view.

Career prospects
The Master’s at the University of Twente is an academic programme that will prepare you for your career as a biomedical engineer in healthcare, industry or research institutions (including PhD positions). You may work in settings ranging from hospitals and rehabilitation centres to medical technology companies and laboratories.
