Students enrolled in the course will be asked to sign up for one of the case studies/assignments listed in the programme. These may include refugee status determination exercises, the drafting of a policy brief or of a project proposal for an NGO documentation/litigation initiative, or court observation. All case studies/assignments will be presented and assigned during the first session of the course. Students will work in teams. As much as possible, their preferences will be taken into account.
Cases/assignments will also serve as a basis for discussion in the sessions concerned. On the basis of instructions/questions received, students will need to submit their work (document of up to 4 pages, with references in annex) ahead of the corresponding session and share it with other students enrolled in the course.
Further information and guidance on this will be shared in the first session.
The final exam will consist in a 2-hour, written exam (closed-book). It will include a case-study component. The dates for the final exam will be shared in due course.
The overall final grade will be calculated as follows:
40 %: Case study/assignment
60 %: Final exam
Overall participation in the seminar will be taken into account to adjust the final grade.

Programma
Will be successively explored during the course:
The refugee concept, normative and institutional frameworks of reference and related debates (week 1)
Current challenges to access international protection, with a focus on the EU context (week 2)
Systems, standards, procedural safeguards and practices in refugee status determination (week 3)
The content of international protection and legal and policy dimensions attached to key rights (week 4)
The current dynamics in terms of international governance & cooperation and concerning refugees’ access to durable solutions, and notably to resettlement (week 6)
The sessions will draw upon international refugee law and international human rights law, and explore their interplay on specific issues. The approach will not be restricted in terms of geographical scope, although developments within the European Union (EU), and EU law standards, will receive a particular attention. The protection of stateless and internally-displaced persons (IDPs), will not be, as such, in focus.
