This two-day instructor-led Microsoft
Official Workshop provides students with the knowledge and skills to manage and maintain a Web server running Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 on
Microsoft® Windows Server 2003.
This discovery-based Workshop consists primarily of labs that provide hands-on practical activities appropriate for an experienced Web server administrator.
Audience
This Workshop is intended for experienced
Web server administrators with a background in implementing and supporting previous versions of IIS on Microsoft Windows NT® 4.0 or Windows® 2000. The Workshop is targeted specifically at students who need to quickly transfer their current Web server administration skills to IIS 6.0 on Windows
Server 2003. Microsoft Official Workshops are designed to train people who learn best by doing.
At Workshop Completion
After completing this Workshop, students will be able to:
§ Install IIS 6.0 on Windows
Server 2003.
§ Configure application and Web services support on IIS 6.0.
§ Migrate Web sites and applications from earlier versions of IIS.
§ Enhance the security of IIS 6.0 by configuring authentication and access options.
§ Manage Web server configuration settings through the IIS 6.0 metabase.
§ Implement SMTP and POP e-mail services on IIS 6.0.
§ Monitor IIS 6.0 performance and troubleshoot problems.
Prerequisites
Before attending this Workshop, students must have:
§ Practical experience working as a Web server administrator with IIS 4.0 or IIS 5.0.
§ Experience working with Windows
Server 2003.
Students can gain the prerequisite knowledge and skills by completing one of the following groups of courses:
· Course 2295, Implementing Internet Information Services 5.0
· Workshop 2209, Updating
Systems Administrator Skills from Microsoft Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003 or
· Course 2295, Implementing Internet Information Services 5.0
· Course 2299, Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment for an MCSA
Certified on Windows 2000
Student Materials
The student kit includes a workbook and other necessary materials for this class. An evaluation copy of Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (for educational use only) is also provided in the student kit.
Unit 1: Installing IIS 6.0
This unit introduces IIS 6.0 and describes its redesigned architecture. The unit also covers installing IIS 6.0 and introduces the scenarios and tools that will be used throughout the workshop.
Unit Objectives
After completing this unit, students will be able to:
§ Install IIS 6.0.
§ Verify settings of isolation mode and configure auto updates.
§ Create a new Web site and virtual directory.
§ Install IIS 6.0 Resource Kit.
Unit 2: Enabling the Web Server as an Application Server
This unit explains application pooling, isolation mode, and Web gardens and covers how to configure these features to provide application server functionality.
Unit Objectives
After completing this unit, students will be able to:
§ Configure the application server.
§ Implement application pooling in worker process isolation mode.
§ Configure a Web garden.
§ Implement an FTP Site in user isolation mode.
Unit 3: Manually Migrating to IIS 6.0
This unit explains how existing Web sites can be migrated from previous versions of IIS by using a manual process.
Unit Objectives
After completing this unit, students will be able to:
§ Manually migrate a Web site from IIS 4.0 or IIS 5.0 to IIS 6.0.
§ Manually migrate an existingWeb site.
§ Choose the correct isolation mode.
Unit 4: Using the Migration Tool to Migrate a Web Site to IIS 6.0
This unit explains how the IIS migration tool can be used to automatically migrate Web sites from previous versions.
Unit Objectives
After completing this unit, students will be able to:
§ Perform pre-migration tasks.
§ Migrate a Web site using the migration tool.
§ Perform post-migration tasks.
Unit 5: Configuring Authentication and Authorization on IIS 6.0
This unit provides hands-on experience of how to enhance Web server security by configuring authentication options, restricting access through permissions, enabling security-enhanced communications protocols, and implementing .NET Passport.
Unit Objectives
After completing this unit, students will be able to:
§ Secure Web application sites in IIS 6.0.
§ Configure authentication.
§ Configure authorization (restrict access to Web pages).
§ Enable secure communications (enable IPSec).
§ Configure .NET Passport authentication.
§ Install and configure SSL.
Unit 6: Managing the MetabaseThis unit explains the differences in how the metabase is used in
IIS 6.0 and provides practical experience of how to modify, back up, and restore the metabase.
Unit Objectives
After completing this unit, students will be able to:
§ Manage IIS configuration settings by modifying the metabase.
§ Back up the metabase.
§ Restore the metabase.
§ Copy configuration settings to another machine.
§ Understand key points in managing the metabase.
Unit 7: Implementing E-Mail Services in IIS 6.0
This unit explains how to configure and manage e-mail services for
IIS 6.0, including the new POP3 service provided by Windows Server 2003.

After completing this unit, students will be able to:
§ Enable SMTP and POP3 mail onIIS 6.0.
§ Implement SMTP service.
§ Implement POP3 service.
Unit 8: Monitoring Performance and Troubleshooting IIS 6.0
This unit covers how to troubleshoot performance and access problems with IIS 6.0 and provides hands-on experience in monitoring and logging Web server activity.

After completing this unit, students will be able to:
§ Troubleshoot typical performance and access problems with IIS 6.0.
§ Troubleshoot access problems.
§ Monitor Web site performance.
