  • I am in the 2nd yr for the International Electrical engineering course at Saxion. The Teachers are very helpful and the practical and theoretical classes pair very well together. Even during corona time the teachers have adapted pretty nicely to online classes, proving sufficient exercise, and trying thier best to make classes as interactive as possible. They also are very available to answer questions between classes. During the first year it was hard to adapt since there is a lot of self-studying expected, and also there tends to be a basic knowledge gap between what dutch students know and what international students know. But there are classes provided to fill that gap as best as possible. Additionally, it can feel like there is a slight disconnect between the English and Dutch language, as it is not the first language of most teachers. Of course this is expected when you study in the Netherlands in English. but this aspect does not impact the study in a detrimental way.

Emagister presenta il percorso formativo Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Robot System Engineering) - Saxion University.

Sul corso: Saxion University of Applied Sciences is a great HBO where you can develop the required skills and be ready for the real world once you are done with studies. The first two years in my course are filled with classes where you get the right knowledge. Of course you should dedicate time to it and study in your free time. There are a lot of online resources and books which can help you have a better insight of the topics you need. The last two years are way more practical where you have a project that Saxion provides, an internship, a minor and the final thesis. Each one of these modules is 6 months. Myself I am in the third year and looking forward to the upcoming challenges.

Programma

The programme
The first half year of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Applied Computer Science is the same. Then Electrical and Electronic Engineering focuses a little more on the hardware, the electronics. In Applied Computer Science, you will increasingly work with the software that runs on the hardware. In Electrical and Electronic Engineering you can also use your knowledge on large systems for industry or the energy generation and distribution network.

Year 1 - Learn the language of technology
In the first year you get a solid foundation in mathematics and learn all about networking, analogue electronics, digital electronics, and programming. You will put this knowledge to good use as you work on various projects. Among other things, you will make a safe with an electronic code lock and a self-driving, energy-efficient robotic racing car. All the projects are controlled with C, running on the popular Arduino microcontroller.
Courses: Mathematics / Physics / Electrical networks: DC (direct current), AC (alternating current), and power / Programming in C / Digital and analogue electronics / Communication skills and personal development / Projects: hardware, software, and system

Year 2 - Will you choose Electronics or Energy Technology?
Electrical Information Engineering (Electronics)
You will learn all about microelectronics and the link to the ‘real world’ with sensors. You will also learn techniques for making chips work properly, how to program chips, and about wireless communication.
Courses: Mathematics and control engineering / Object-oriented programming / Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) / Microcontrollers and programmable hardware (FPGA & HDL) / Data networks and telecommunications / Analogue and power electronics / Personal development / Projects: simulation and implementation, electronic system

Electrical Power and Automation (Energy Technology)
How do you make electrical energy available to people as sustainably as possible? This includes the smart use of wind turbines and solar farms as well as the range of the electric car.
Courses: Mathematics and control engineering / Object-oriented programming / Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) / Power electronics / Energy supply: smart grids, power quality, generation, transport, and distribution / Electric drives / Personal development / Projects: simulation and implementation, industrial automation system

Year 3 & 4
Internship, research, minor and graduation In the third and fourth years you do a half-year internship, complete a minor, conduct your research in the Smart Solutions Semester, and work on a research project with students from various degree programmes. A good example of such a research project is the Cleantech house, a house that generates its own energy. After that, you do your final project, which may be at a company or in your own start-up for example, and there are even options for doing it abroad. The programme has contacts in China and Vietnam and participates in the European Project Semester, which is a collaboration involving ten European universities.

Career opportunities
As an electrical engineer you can work anywhere. At SMEs or multinationals, in the manufacturing industry, or at development companies. For example, you will be qualified to work as a programmer of software operating systems, as a consultant at an engineering firm, or as a designer of electronics for a radar system. Or you can focus on research, development, and design. Do you have international ambitions? With your degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering you can work worldwide.
