Programma

Explore the common illnesses and injuries affecting clients attending A&E. Learn to critically evaluate the accepted initial and definitive management of these conditions, and link them to current policy. Increase your appreciation of effective teamwork and inter-disciplinary collaboration.

Injury or illness may occur suddenly or arise as a consequence of an underlying condition. It may have life threatening implications. Patients of almost any age and with almost any problem attend emergency care services and consequently, staff working in the emergency care arena need a sound clinical knowledge base across a spectrum of conditions.

The purpose of this module is to develop and explore knowledge, skills and professional capability in managing the complex needs of the patient in the emergency care arena. Contemporary approaches to initial and definitive management of these illnesses and injuries are critically evaluated, through the use of effective teamwork and inter-disciplinary collaboration, and related to current key policy drivers in the practice situation. The course will examine delivery of ‘holistic healthcare’ in a complex system.

Patient safety is an absolute priority, and this module will explore current innovations in practice, processes and procedures which have improved the safety of emergency care patients. Content will ensure patient safety and their experience are central to emergency care decision making and clinical practise, embedding a culture of compassionate care, in line with current literature and core NHS values.

Learning and teaching strategies include lectures and skills workshops, with a significant emphasis on interactive scenario based simulation training. Opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills within the practitioner's specialty will be facilitated. Learning and teaching in clinical practice will be under the supervision of an experienced practitioner within the students own clinical area.

How you’ll learn
This course includes both theory and practice, so you’ll learn in the classroom as well as in the clinical setting. You’ll attend or participate in lectures, seminars, group work and scenarios. When in clinical practice, you’ll be supervised by an experienced practitioner from your own clinical discipline.

Assessment
You’ll be assessed on the theory you’ve learned as well as your practical competence. The theory is assessed through objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), which look at the way you derive theory from evidence-based practice.
