Micro and Nanotechnology is an emerging area of science and technology, with developments and innovations that are radically changing our lives and the different aspects of the same. Their pervasiveness and cross-disciplinary application is absolute, since there is no scientific or technical field that does not benefit from them. Expectations and future potential are even greater, thanks to the continuous deepening of knowledge about physical phenomena at the nanoscale, materials and their properties, and finally on the technologies for their processing and exploitation in devices (electronics, sensors, actuators, energy harvesters, ... ). Therefore, the application areas and the job opportunities for a graduate in Nanotechnology for ICT are extremely diversified and typically associated to companies or research centers operating at the highest international levels in terms of innovation.

The multidisciplinary nature of micro and nanotechnology, required for the transformation of ideas into applications, can be approached from different points of view. As to introduce a simplification and an almost didactic classification, there are two main approaches: one called " bottom up" approach that involves the construction or the assisted self-assembly of nanostructures starting from the basic elements of matter (atoms and molecules) and the so-called "top down", whose purpose is to develop more and more complex tools and techniques to transform the material from macroscopic objects (eg . a silicon wafer ) to get items and devices with an increasing resolution of its fundamental components. Think for instance to the smallest transistors currently on the market, based on a technology with a resolution of 22 nm, while similar devices with a resolution of 14 nm are being developed.
