CULTURAL ANTHROLOPOGY
Introduction to Cultural Anthropology:
- what is cultural anthropology, its fields of investigation, its different branches and approaches
- ethnographic method: participant observation, interviews, reflexivity, ‘thick’ and ‘thin’ description, research ethics, access to the field, interaction between ethnographer and social actors
Anthropological understanding of the body:
- culturally shaped conceptions of the body, social constructions of personhood, cultural perspectives on health, well-being, illness, and treatment
- body images in Western and non-Western societies, techniques of the body, the notion of habitus, bodily experience, treatment of dead bodies, body modifications and prostheses, body and gender, documentary on healing and spirit possession
Analysis of ethnographic accounts in medical anthropology
- complexity of the relation between doctors and patients, use and misuse of medical devices, implementation of medical protocols and prevention in different cultural contexts, communicative situations with patients affected by speech disabilities or in other contexts of rehabilitation.
