ANALYSIS AND GOVERNANCE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The PhD program in Analysis and Governance of Sustainable Development aims to educate and train research students for professions in the fields of Sustainable development and environmental governance.

The program offers extensive preparation in the development of interdisciplinary skills and knowledge for dealing with economic, environmental and socio-cultural questions that characterize sustainable development.

Based on data from previous academic years, the PhD program in Analysis and Governance of Sustainable Development offered a total of 1108 hours of classroom lessons and 48 hours of laboratory study, while 62 faculty staff members conducted and taught core and elective courses.

TOPICS

  • methods and criteria for collecting and monitoring data and for the implementation of information systems

  • environmental assessment: analysis of environmental risk, life cycle, environmental impact, environmental auditing and Sustainable assessment

  • economic evaluation: cost benefits, contingent assessment and multi-criteria analysis

  • decision-making and policy implementation support

  • strategic planning and participatory processes

  • comparative analysis, institutes and problems related to governance.

    The academic program includes the study of methods of analysis, evaluation of questions and problems concerning sustainable development, as well as the acquisition of knowledge and innovative skills for the governance of territorial systems and International cooperation.

    GOALS

    The goal of the program is to form research professionals capable of working with complex environmental and territorial questions within fields related to: production of analysis processes through the use of innovative tools and technologies; environmental quality assessment, socio-cultural suitability, and program and project economy; project governance and territorial development programs.

    DIDACTICS

    Attendance

    The first year of the program involves basic and specialized courses in the form of lectures and seminars, offering a theoretical and methodological approach to sustainable development and interdisciplinary studies. Students must attend a minimum of 300 hours of lessons.

    The second and third years of the program are dedicated to developing the student's research project which is based on a individualized work plan. During the second year students are given the opportunity to attend advanced courses on various subjects of their choice, in addition to research and study opportunities at international academic institutions and organizations. The third year is dedicated to developing and concluding students' doctoral dissertations.

    Evaluation methods

    First year students are required to take exams at the termination of all courses and seminars in order to properly evaluate their interdisciplinary knowledge and research abilities. Students must pass at least 70% of the exams taken in order to be admitted to the second year of PhD study.

    In the place of formal exams, second and third year students will be required to undergo biannual reviews regarding the progress of their research work. Over the course of the three-year period, students must complete at least twelve months of research activity, as well as post-graduate specialization and training at a foreign university or scientific institute of research.

    Collaboration and Agreements with other Universities

    The PhD program in Analysis and Governance of Sustainable Development:

  • is the initiator of an International agreement, the RIM Project (Réseau Inter-Disciplinaire Mèditerranéen Project), which provides for the exchange of faculty staff and students among member universities. The project is conferred by the Università Ca'.Foscari Venezia, the University of Tunis El Manar, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Université Mohammed V Souissi of Rabat

  • is a participant in the cultural exchange program promoted by the Ministry for the Environment and Territory, the Venice International University and the Tsinghua University of Peking which supports PhD student participation through study grants. Professors from Tsinghua University will be asked to participate as conference, seminar and workshop speakers

  • collaborates with the group of universities that includes the Venice International University, in particular with Duke University and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

  • conferred a collaborative exchange agreement with JRC, the European Commission, and the University of Flacso (Ecuador).
