Integral components for the course evaluation are: Participation in class, also through collaborative work and group work; individual reading and writing assignments and video recording that assess students’ understanding and capacity to critically rethink the course contents. Design and elaboration and class presentation of group work activities, theme based with an international outlook. Active participation in the yearly themed ‘LAB’ and completion of related assignements, are core components of the final evaluation.

Programma

The course provides an overview of global communications as a multidimensional field of study, as well as conceptual and methodological tools to conduct research and operate in the global context. It offers opportunities to master themes and developments that are relevant to understand contemporary realities and debates around communications, and operate as media professionals therein: a diachronic perspective on international debates around communication; the transnational structures of global news fro a political economy perspective; critical analyses of contents and languages – including visual – of international news.
The course will offer thematic foci on current issues in the global media agenda, also with the contribution of experts as guests. Such foci are announced at the beginning of the course.
A transversal theme is that of communication rightd: freedom of expression, freedom of association and participation, cultural rights, right to privacy.
The course also adopts a gender mainstreaming perspective: all themes and topics are dealt with in due consideration of their relevance and implication for gender equality.
The yearly thematic LAB will be focused on gender equality in the media, linking to a European project – AGEMI. Advancing good practices in media industries – the teacher is co-coordinating. The project offers a series of educational materials (video lectures and interactive activities) and a dataset of good practices in the field. Students will be involved in testing such materials, and will engage in international and intercultural exchanges with students from other international universities (UK, Sweden, Mexico, Australia depending on time and schedule of respective courses) through a collaborative ‘virtual exchange’ blended learning approach that involve the AGEMI Consortium and the Unesco Unitwin Network on Gender Media and ICT.
