What we see above is the statement of the 11th Sustainable Development Goal, one of the 17 adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The impact of anthropisation and, above all, the process of extended urbanisation on the planet, with the related environmental and social challenges, need the action of specialised professionals in the field of territorial governance to analyse, represent and assess current and future transformations as well as to plan scenarios and tools for decision-making.
This is the mission for our students: Spatial planners, Urban Managers, Spatial Analysts and, also, experts in territorial transformation dynamics. Job markets for our students are both in the public and private sector: from planning authorities at different territorial levels, to enterprises that have interests in urban and regional development, to agencies and organisations that deal with R&D in local and global contexts.
The United Nations highlight the importance of education and training for spatial planners, as stated in article 102 of the “Quito Declaration on Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements for All” of the United Nations (Habitat III Conference, New Urban Agenda, 2016):
We will strive to improve capacity for urban planning and design and providing training for urban planners at national, sub-national, and local levels
This professional competence, recognised in the EU Directive 2005/36/CE, has an established tradition in European countries (Town and Country Planning, Spatial Planning, Urbanisme) and the Politecnico di Torino has been one of the first universities in Italy to create a programme in Planning (in 2001, after the national reform of regulated professions).

In 15 years, the MSc in Territorial, Urban, Environmental and Landscape Planning has trained more than 400 planners for the Italian context, attracting students from all over the country. Furthermore, since 2017/2018 a.y...
