Change is something we are never without, but sometimes the economy goes through a fundamental change, a paradigm shift, a particularly disruptive shift in technology and in the problems businesses must solve. Currently, we are undergoing two such changes at the same time: a green transition – changes in technologies, business practices and markets made urgent by recognition of the limits of the natural systems we use – and a digital transition, the continuing information revolution. These changes present ongoing challenges for strategic management in international business.

The bulk of the DBA consists of four core modules, and your thesis. The first two modules cover strategic and general management issues raised by the green and digital transitions respectively. The next two modules focus on marketing and finance issues presented by those transitions.

The Foundation Courses aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of applied research methods
and methodologies by accompanying skills and abilities that will prepare candidates to undertake research for their DBA thesis in the field of higher education management. The Foundation Courses are taught throughout the programme on-site as well as online (synchronous and asynchronous) and will be available for all DBA candidates at Luiss Business School.

The DBA is designed for managers and leaders who see that want to advance in their professional careers, particularly those whose role (or desired role) requires dealing with problems of the green or digital transitions. Candidates must have at least a master’s degree and significant work experience (7+ years) with increasing levels of responsibility.

-Admission Test: The Admission Test evaluates the applicant’s skills, personal motivations, and potential. It can be administered on campus or remotely. The Admission Test consists of personal interviews focused on the essay or outline of personal research interest and the motivation letter.

-Application: Fill in the Application Form to apply for the admission test available on the programme website. The following documents will be requested:

a) copy of degree certificate(s)
b) at least one letter of recommendation from academic or professional supervisor
c) curriculum vitae
d) digital ID photo
e) copy of passport or ID document
f) admission fee receipt of € 100 (non-refundable)
g) motivation Letter
h) essay or outline of personal research interes

Most DBAs are general – they prepare you to do some research and write a thesis on your chosen topic. The Luiss Business School DBAs are focused on major changes happening on the market. Our belief is that if you choose a DBA with the right focus you will get more out of it, not only from your own research but from the faculty, from the guest lecturers, and from fellow students who are facing challenges similar to yours in their own workplaces and careers.

Programma

Module 1: Management and Strategy in the Green Transition

April – Rome

We will analyse problems of business strategy and leadership in the context of the green transition:

The green transition as a move to a new techno-economic paradigm; lessons from past paradigm changes, and limits of those lessons in the green case

Strategies in the transition

  • Dealing with change, and with conflicting goals: old ways and new ways, sustainability, and profitability
  • How is the transition affecting your organization’s business model and value proposition?
  • The external business environment – regulatory and stakeholder issues, customer/supplier relations along the value chain, globalvalue chains
  • Sustainability issues in facilities, locations, and transport.

Module 2: The information economy, digitization, and intangible assets

October – Amsterdam

In this module we analyse the challenges digitization poses for both the strategy and the structure of business

  • Forms of organization in the digital context: platforms, ecosystems, networks
  • Intangible assets
  • Innovation in a digital context
  • Effects on market structure; winner-take-all competition
  • Implications of big data.

Module 3: Sustainability and digitization: marketing issues

April – Rome

In this module we will deepen how, by rigorously working on marketing essentials, companies might increase their economic, social, and reputational performance, affecting multiple stakeholders. Over the course of the module, starting from a deep understanding of (a) value creation mechanisms in marketing and (b) applied research methodologies in this field, students will be developing a forward- looking perspective on critical issues related to sustainability and digitalization, combining a theoretical and an applied perspective. We will examine how consumer behaviors affect – and are affected themselves – by those topics, along with issues related to Customer Centricity and Customer Experience; how Touchpoints evolution affect Decision Journeys and Moment of truth; New forms of Brand and Product Management in a digitalized and sustainable perspective; changes fueled by MarkTech; Integrated Marketing Communication and Marketing Performance Measurement.

Module 4: Accounting and Corporate Finance in the Modern Environment

October – Amsterdam

In this module we study the current trends and trajectories that enables Accounting and Finance practice to support contemporary organization in achieving Sustainable success through the creation of short, medium and long term value. Innovative practices arising from the dual (green and digital) transition will be discussed along with the evolutions on financial and managerial accounting; valuation of intangible assets; sustainable finance; political and environmental risk in the corporate valuations; integrated reporting; multi-capital performance measurement and impact-oriented analysis; best practices in data analytics.

Field trips

Field trip. In the second year, after completion of the Core modules, we will meet (location to be decided) to visit facilities of two different multinational companies, and to learn from them how they are meeting the challenges of the green and digital transitons.
