You’re looking to specialise in urology, and to be taught by some of the best urology practitioners and academics in the UK. This course will help you develop your clinical, leadership and research skills. You’ll learn to innovate and drive change, and to improve patient experiences and outcomes.

This is one of very few masters programmes in urology in the UK. It was designed, and is taught, in partnership with consultant urologists at Cambridge University Hospitals Trust, which has an international reputation for excellence.

You’ll learn about the anatomy, basic sciences and path-physiology of urological conditions, to aid effective diagnosis and determining appropriate surgical and non-surgical management pathways, so that when you complete the course you’ll be fully equipped to engage with all aspects of urology. You’ll focus on the protection of patients and setting the highest standards for practice. You’ll be encouraged to explore the roles of innovation, research and creativity in evaluating and influencing practice in order to improve service delivery.

Research design and methodology is a key aspect of the course, so you’ll be expected to conduct primary research via a dissertation or clinical study. Cambridge University Hospitals Trust is highly research-active, and your research on this course (supported by supervisors with a strong track record of publication) will contribute to its body of work.

You’ll develop your problem-solving, critical-thinking and leadership skills so that you can identify problem areas, challenge accepted practice, and propose innovative and effective solutions. You’ll develop your understanding of, and respond appropriately to, the needs of all patient groups in order to optimise investigations and outcomes.

Profilo del corso

This course will deepen your understanding of urology, and you’ll make significant progress in linking theory and practice with research. You’ll sharpen your creative and critical thinking, and you’ll develop your ideas around innovation and change management. These skills will be invaluable to you in building your career progression and will also be attractive to employers.

The course is intended for junior trainees before they begin a registrar programme in urology, although it is also open to urology registrars. It is theory-based, so you’ll be expected to do your hands-on clinical practice at your place of work. You’ll experience a mix of face-to-face and distance learning.

Programma

Modules & assessment
  • Clinical and Applied Science in Urological DiseaseTaught by practising, research-active consultant urologists, this module will link your studies to your own practice. You’ll deepen your understanding of the anatomy, basic sciences and path-physiology of urological conditions, improving your clinical decision making for e¬ffective diagnosis and determining appropriate surgical and non-surgical management pathways. You’ll gain an enhanced understanding of the pathogenesis and progression of pathology, and the correct clinical and radiological examination options together with current evidence base to underpin practice.
  • Clinical Leadership and Service Development (30 credits)Clinical governance provides a framework through which healthcare organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish. Several strategies in achieving continuous quality improvement include effective clinical leadership, development of staff, implementation of evidence based practice and engaging in effective audit and evaluation of services against a backdrop of best practice to identify service development needs. Central to this is accountability and risk management. Doctors/surgeons are in a unique position with which to lead and develop care. The role of clinical audit is pivotal in providing supporting evidence for service development. Allied to this is the need for robust knowledge of leadership theory and the management of change, together with ethical and legal principles. The role of the team will be identified with the importance of clinical competence as a key component in the continuing professional development of the doctors/surgeons and the staff that they lead. Assessment will be a service development plan from your own area of practice.
  • Research StudiesDesigned to provide you with a critical overview of the main methodologies and designs applied to research within health, social work and social care, professional practice and policy. It provides you with an opportunity to explore the theoretical dilemmas which underlie the process of inquiry and its relationship to practice. All professionals need to be highly skilled and knowledgeable to meet the demands of complex activity which underpins much professional practice and demonstrate that research directly informs practice. It’ll provide a framework within which to select, evaluate and justify the research methods chosen by you for your research project. The module requires you to prepare and write a research proposal which will normally lead to a level 7 dissertation. Hence prior knowledge of some research approaches at level 6 is expected. This module is taken by students on a variety of MA/ MSc/MCh courses. Learning will usually be with a group of students who bring different academic and/or professional interests to their study, thus providing a community of collaborative working well suited to interdisciplinary exploration.
  • Major ProjectThe major project is at the centre of the Masters award and allows you to demonstrate your creativity and apply the skills and concepts you have learned in the previous modules. It is the opportunity for you to carry out an in depth study in a specific area and to expand or redefine existing knowledge. In practical terms, you’ll be provided with a list of available research projects prior to the major project but will also have the opportunity to suggest your own projects. It is hoped that many of these projects will be carried out with either an industrial partner or a clinician. In the course of the project you may generate intellectual property, defined as an idea, invention or creation which can be protected by law from being copied by someone else.
Assessment

We use a range of assessment methods to check your progress during your studies and make sure that you'll meet the required standards when you complete the course.

Methods include essays, case reports, blogs, presentations, on line activities, literature reviews, a research proposal, a work-related project, a major project (dissertation/report), exams and a viva voce oral Q&A.

Although they vary, our assessment strategies are all carefully designed to challenge you so that you expand your critical and creative thinking as well as your problem-solving skills.

This is a two year, part-time programme

Please note that you will need to complete all of the above core modules. This course does not have any optional modules. Modules are subject to change and availability.
