Programma

Adriatic Studies is the only master's program focusing on the study of the Adriatic region as a dynamic and historically rich geopolitical and cultural field. Through the innovative and interdisciplinary framework of the MA in Adriatic Studies, students gain an in-depth understanding of the region, its diverse components, and the intricate networks of mobility, trade, and exchange from the 14th to the 18th century.

Program Structure

The Adriatic Studies program lasts for four semesters. The first three semesters consist of courses and seminars, while the fourth is dedicated to the completion of a master's thesis. The program culminates in the Colloquium in Corfu, where students present their research and participate in workshops. All courses, communication, and written work are conducted in English.

Course Coordinator
Each course is led by a designated coordinating professor responsible for organizing the lectures and assessing students' performance. The coordinator begins the semester with an introductory lecture and provides an overview of the course topics. Additionally, the coordinator has the discretion to invite guest lecturers to cover specific aspects of the subject matter, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the course content.

Seminars
Seminars play a crucial role in the MA curriculum, offering students opportunities to broaden their knowledge, shape their research skills, and refine their critical thinking abilities. Through these activities, students are able to explore the history of the Adriatic from diverse disciplinary perspectives and engage with innovative methods of historical analysis, which offer deep insights into emerging theories.

Although linked to the core courses, seminars maintain a degree of autonomy. By the end of the three semesters, students are required to have successfully completed three (3) seminars. These experiences provide valuable academic enrichment and a platform for students to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in their coursework.

Fieldwork

In the third semester, a geography fieldwork is included, which will take place in Padua as part of our collaboration with the Department of History, Geography, and Antiquities of the local university. This activity is mandatory for all students.

Thesis and Colloquium
The fourth semester is dedicated to the writing of the thesis. Students must choose their thesis topic and supervisor by the end of the second semester. During the fourth semester, a colloquium is held in Corfu, where students present their thesis topics, preliminary research findings, and a detailed work plan. The colloquium takes the form of a conference, featuring student presentations and parallel workshops where the topics are explored and discussed in depth. Professors provide organizational support and advisory input but take a back seat in the intellectual discussions, allowing students to take the lead.
