You’ll learn how to investigate and resolve complex clinical scenarios and further develop your clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills. You’ll be assessed via objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) and multiple choice questions.
  • Effective Clinical PracticeOffering you a competitive advantage for your future career development, this module addresses clinical governance, patient safety and quality improvement by examining avoidable error and enabling you to learn more rational approaches to improving patient outcomes in a complex environment. It considers factors contributing to error such as human factors, dysfunctional teamwork, ineffective decision-making and complexity in modern medicine. This module explores risk management and medico-legal jurisprudence, taking into account ethics, leadership, culture, change, training, finance, communication and education in the management of clinical performance. You will learn strategies for the effective auditing and evaluation of healthcare services to identify development needs. Assessment is via a 6,000-word in-depth case study in a subject of your choice.
  • Global Health - Perspectives and PracticeYou’ll explore how global medicine has changed modern clinical thinking, looking at the ethics, politics and economics of global health practice. You’ll consider the effects of practising in challenging environments, examining patient experiences at a micro level and different healthcare systems at a macro level. You’ll look at changing epidemiology and issues around gender, mental health, migration, conflict, human rights and more. You will be assessed via individual or group interactive presentation workshops.
  • Research StudiesYou’ll develop a critical overview of the main research methodologies in health, social work & social care, policy and professional practice. You’ll cover issues of terminology, methodology, process, governance, ethics, validity, objectivity and generalisability. You’ll critique published studies with different research approaches, and write your own research proposal.
  • Major ProjectYou’ll demonstrate your ability to synthesise learning from other modules and from there to plan, conduct and write up a research or work-based project. You’ll be expected to raise meaningful questions about your specialty and may even work at the current limits of theoretical and/or research understanding, showing how you can use existing knowledge to develop new approaches.
Assessment

We use a range of assessment methods to enable both you and the university to check your progress during your studies and then to ensure that you meet the required standards when you complete the course.

Although they vary, our assessment strategies are all carefully designed to challenge you so that you expand your critical and creative thinking as well as your problem-solving skills. The assessments will enable you to demonstrate that you can synthesise existing knowledge and accumulate new knowledge, and will evidence the development of your professional practice.

On this course, your assessment methods will include objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) and multiple choice questions; a 6,000-word in-depth case study related to your subject specialty; an annotated PowerPoint; a research proposal; a research report; and data analysis.

Please note that you will need to complete all of the above core modules. This course does not have any optional modules. Modules are subject to change and availability.
