The periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that studies hard and soft tissues supporting teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them.

The clinical periodontology studies the diagnosis, the prognosis and the treatment of all kind of inflammatory pathology affecting the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.

The aim of this Master program is to improve the knowledge of clinical periodontology in dentists who want to study in deep this subject performing diagnosis, prognosis and treatment according to the evidence base dentistry and the clinical experience of tutors.

One of the following degree titles are required to be admitted to the Professional Master Program (or near graduation by the Master enrollment deadline):

Master’s degree in Medicine and Surgery;
Master’s degree and / or specialist degree in dentistry and dental prosthesis;
Master’s degree and/ or specialist degree in medicine and surgery with specialization in odontostomatology or qualification for the practice of dentistry.

Programma

TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Theoretical and practical sessions will be integrated by practical session on artificial and animal models.

The following materials will be given to students by CD:

  • Surgical scheme;
  • Periodontal chart for the dental office;
  • Video of live-surgery.

Each student could bring to the dental clinic 2 their patients to perform oral surgery as first operator lead by the professor/tutor.

The clinical surgery session would be performed during the course according to the calendar of practical lessons.

The calendar of the lessons could be modified and adjusted, with adequate notice, due to the national and international scientific calendar.


The Master’s program includes the following teaching modules:

Module 1 (3 CFU)

  • Anatomy, physiology and physiopathology of the supporting tissues around teeth and clinical implications.
  • Etiopathogenesis and pathological anatomy of periodontal disease
  • Semeiotics and diagnosis of periodontal disease

Module (2 CFU)

  • Periodontal disease and systemic conditions: a bidirectional relationship.
  • Periodontal disease no-plaque associated

Module 3 (2 CFU)

  • Evolution of microbiology: from Koch to Microbiome.
  • Infection and colonization of dental roots.
    • Mechanical treatment to control the dental root’s infection.
    • Chemotherapy treatment strategies to control dental root’s infection.
  • Guidelines for Surgical and Non-Surgical treatment strategies for the management of periodontal disease

Module 4 (2 CFU)

  • Non-surgical periodontal treatment NSPT
    • Modifications of the NSPT protocol and initial preparation
    • The soft tissue response

Module 5 (2 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT basic strategies
    • Instruments
    • Flap and Surgical techniques
    • Management of interdental papilla and soft tissue aesthetic
    • Healing of surgical flap and defects
    • Stitches and suture techniques in periodontal surgery

Module 6 ( 2 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT
    • Causal therapy and reduction of the gingival pocket
    • Rationale
    • Indications and limits

Module 7 (2 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT: Reconstruction of periodontium

Master Start Date: February 2023

Location:
Lectures will be held at the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano. The practical Hands on and the internship will be held at the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano.

Language: English

Final Certification and Formative Credits: 
all candidates who have completed the planned training and passes the final exam will receive a second level Master’s Degree in Clinical Periodontology with the assignment of 60 credits (CFU).

Duration: the Master’s program lasts 12 months and includes a total time of 1.500 hours, divided into: practical activity and lectures and seminars; internship (750 hours); study and individual preparation activities including the preparation of the final exam.

Attendance mode: the attendance is mandatory for at least the 75% of the total hours of the Master. For frontal lectures and seminars (unless otherwise comunication) a commitment of 4 session of approximately 5 days is forseen for the entire duration of the Master. The total hours of training will be scheduled in accordance with the host structure. A minimum number of 15 students is requested in order to start the Master. Below the thershold of 15, UniCamillus can unilaterally decide not to activate the Master (participants will receive the already paid partecipant fees back). 
The minimum number of available seats is of 15.
